Hospital

Artist Statement | Visiting people in hospitals has never been at the top of my list. Intentions are always good — go and support family and friends — but something about the place makes me uncomfortable. Such was the case in early 2012, when much of my time was spent inside a room at the hospital. Lots of conversations that felt forced. Always questions that began with How or Why. And plenty of time for this observer to wonder what to say or do.

One day I brought my camera. At first I was reticent about taking photos, but slowly figured out that there was no one right thing to do in this situation. I quickly found comfort in capturing my observations. My surroundings lost their power once I relegated them to the status of subject matter.

Hospital is a record, via image and essay, of the difficult experience of visiting a loved one in the hospital.
