Hospital

Artist Statement | Visiting people in hospitals has never been at the top of my list. Intentions are always good — go and support family and friends — but something about the place makes me uncomfortable. Such was the case in early 2012, when much of my time was spent inside a room at the hospital. Conversations all felt forced. Questions all began with How or Why. And plenty of time for this observer to wonder what to say or do.

One day I brought my camera. At first I was reticent; I mean, was it right to take photos in this situation? But the difference between right and wrong was not as clear as black and white. I was able to disappear behind the camera, finding comfort in capturing my observations.

Hospital is a visual record of the difficult experience of visiting a loved one in the hospital.
